Do you live in Washington and need an International Driving Permit?
Unfortunately, all AAAs in Washington (including both Seattle locations) closed their offices in June 2025. Historically, you’d be able to walk into an office to get an IDP in-person, same day. However, AAA is now serving all WA members online only or by mail, but don’t worry - PriorityIDP is here to the rescue!
Do you live in Seattle or broader Washington, are planning to drive abroad, and need an International Driving Permit (IDP)? Here’s what you need to know:
What are my options as a Washington resident for obtaining an IDP?
1. If you’re in a rush, PriorityIDP is the fastest and cheapest way to get an IDP. After you apply, our team physically goes to our partner AAA office based in Minnesota with your application the same day. We can then ship it to you as quickly as you need it to anywhere in the world.
Our fastest delivery options are next-day for domestic destinations and usually 2-3 business days for most international cities.
You can apply here at priorityidp.com/apply.
2. If you have more than two weeks before your trip, you can still apply with AAA directly by mail or online. You’ll have to fill out the same application that we have with passport photos, pictures of your license, and trip information.
AAA Pacific Northwest recommends applying at least two weeks before your trip to allow sufficient time on processing and shipping.
No matter which option you choose, be careful about IDP scammers! There are many websites that claim to deliver a digital IDP without involving official issuers (AAA or AATA) recognized by the US State Department.
Hold up - what even is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
An International Driving Permit is a translation document of your US driver’s license into multiple languages so that foreign authorities / officials can confirm you are legally allowed to drive. However, most countries will still require you to have your actual license so you will need to carry both.
150+ foreign countries require this permit for US drivers. Without one, you may have your rental car denied, be fined and car impounded, or even thrown into jail in some extreme cases! (This is very very rare but we have heard of these horror stories from customers).
